Position: Youth Services Director
Reports to: Librarian/Director
Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the Library Director, the Youth
Services Director is responsible for providing library services to children,
birth through 18 years. In conjunction
with the Library Director, the Youth Services Director is also responsible for
supervising the work of the Assistant to the Youth Services Director.
General
Responsibilities:

Collection Development - Keep within budgetary
constraints, use recommendations from professional journals, other librarians,
and the public, and monitor donations to develop and maintain a current and balanced
collection of children’s/teen materials that reflects the needs of our patrons,
is quality literature, and provides limited curriculum support to Southern
Lehigh School District. This includes
preparation/placement of orders and final review of items before moving them to
circulating shelves.

Collection Maintenance – Use a systematically designed
schedule and professional reference sources to weed children/teen collection of
outdated, damaged or poorly circulating materials.
- Public Library/Public & Parochial
School Partnership – Continue to build and maintain an ongoing
partnership by informing school personnel of services/resources available
to teachers and students, co-participating in special projects, and
attending monthly school librarians meetings.
- Supervisory Duties - Supervise and
assign duties to the Assistant to the Youth Services Director while
staying within the confines of that employee’s job description. Supervise and assign duties to any
volunteers that may be assisting at the Circulation Desk or assisting with
a project or program.
- Children/Teen/Family Programming –
plan and execute programming, within budgetary constraints, that meets the
needs and interest levels of the community’s children/teens. Required programming is as follows:
- Story
Time for 4’s & 5’s
- 3rd
Grade Orientation for SLSD and St. Michael the Archangel School
- Summer
Reading Club and associated summer activities
- SLSD
MS/HS Summer Reading List support
- National
Library Week
- Kiwanis
Club – Read Around the World
Other special programs or tour
requests from community groups and preschools may be submitted for approval
and/or scheduled on a time/space available basis.
- Public Services - Responsible for
working assigned hours at the Circulation Desk and following written
policies and procedures associated with meeting the library service needs
of the public including checking in/checking out items, registering new
patrons, renewing and/or updating library cards, calculating and accepting
overdue fines and lost/damaged item payments, assisting with reserve
requests, assisting with interlibrary loan requests, providing reference
services using the full range of available resources, providing assistance
at the public computer terminals. Employees
are expected to maintain an excellent level of customer service at all
times, uphold the mission of the library, and support and promote library
programs.
- Public Relations – Responsible for
advertising all programs/activities, policy changes, and special collections
using one or more of the following:
- Local
newspapers and classifieds
- Radio/TV
ads
- In-library
flyers, posters, bookmarks, signs
- Library
newsletter – requires working closely with volunteer newsletter editor
and Library Director to provide written copy and photographs
electronically, meet all newsletter copy deadlines, provide editorial
comment, and proofread final copy for errors. Newsletter is produced quarterly.
- Clerical Services/Meeting Attendance
– The following is required of all employees:
- Attendance
at monthly staff meetings usually held on the first Tuesday of each
month, 8-10AM.
- Participation
in continuing education opportunities, such as workshops, seminars, and
conferences at the request of the Director. Employees may also request the Director’s
permission to attend educational opportunities.
- Opening/closing
of the library, answering telephone calls when secretary is not scheduled,
other clerical duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- MLS
degree from ALA
accredited institution
- Experience
with children in library setting required
- A
minimum of one year’s experience working in a library setting.
- Supervisory
experience required.
- Requires
excellent computer skills, proficiency with Windows XP and Microsoft
Office, especially Word, Publisher, and Excel, and experience using the
Internet for research purposes.
- Requires
experience using a library automation system; familiarity with TLC’s
Library.Solution system especially helpful.
- Requires
excellent communication/interpersonal skills (listening, speaking, and
writing) to a diverse population with varying skill sets.
- Requires
excellent fine motor coordination, good visual skills, and ability to sit,
stand, bend, reach, walk, lift up to 30lbs.
- Requires
good organizational skills and ability to prioritize workload effectively.
- Criminal
history and sexual offenders’ history clearances required.
Schedule &
Benefits
- Full-time;
salary range $24,000-$26,000, commensurate with experience; some days,
evenings, Saturdays.
- Vacation/Sick/Personal/Holiday
time allotted as described in personnel manual.
- Two-week
grace period allowed for overdue items checked out to employees, before
fines begin to accrue.
